Being Successful in 2014

Focus on Being Successful in 2014

being successfulWhat will 2014 bring to your life. Will it just be another year, or will great things happen for you. As you look back at 2013, how did it turn out for you? Most of the time my years don’t quite turn out the way I had anticipated. I, like so many others, don’t seem to focus enough on the things that really matter…focus on being successful.

Last year I reached that milestone of 60 years of life. That tends to be an event that will get you to focus a little. And the year brought many decisions and changes that made an impact on my future in some major ways. So for 2014, I need to be as focused as I’ve ever been.

Looking at the state of our country with politics and the economy, we all need to be focused on success as never before. Yesterday at church our pastor brought us a powerful teaching for the new year. I will share some thoughts with you that I believe can have an impact on your life this coming year.

Decide to Make This Year Count

It all starts with a conscious decision that this year will be the year. Right now you decide to make it happen…no matter what. Ephesians 5:15, 16 says “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days”. That verse could have been written today. Be smart with your decisions. Take more time with them.  Seek advice and council. Educate yourself. Hebrews 12:1 says “….let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up….”. What’s getting in your way? What is distracting you from being successful…in your work, your marriage, your health, your happiness…your life.

You have to put the past behind you. The past is the past. Your future is an open book with blank pages. Write your story on those pages. Write whatever story you want. The apostle Paul is an inspiration to me. He pressed forward through unbelievable odds to accomplish great things. He wrote in Philippians 3:13 “No dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead”. It’s great advice. Isaiah 43:18,19 reads, “But forget all that, it is nothing compared to what I’m going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?”

I want you to open your eyes and see what your future can be. Listen to how successful people think. There are major success stories in the Bible, and those success principles are just as valid today as they were then.

The Secret to Success

being successfulWhen Jesus walked the earth, he visited with many people. One day he stopped by the house of two sisters, Martha and Mary. Martha was busy preparing everything for the guest and making sure everyone had what they needed. Her sister Mary sat at the feet of Jesus listening to what Jesus was teaching. Martha got angry because Mary wasn’t helping her. She actually said to Jesus, “Doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” Now that’s a bold woman. Luke 10:38-42 NLT.

Folks, what comes next is vitally important. It’s the secret sauce, the heart of the matter. Jesus said to Martha, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

What is that one thing for you. Some people refer to it as your Why. Mary listened to the words of the Son of God. Who knows all that was revealed to her, besides the main discovery…Jesus is the Messiah. But her discovery was not going to be taken away from her.

My friends, you must discover that only thing worth being concerned about in your life. Everything else is a distraction. Discover it and don’t let anyone take it from you. So what will be that one thing for you in 2014? Does it concern your health…your finances… your marriage…your dreams? Don’t be afraid to Think Big. Whatever it is, go after it will all that you have.

Persistence

Here’s a parable Jesus told, documented in Luke 11:5-10. This man had a being successfulvisitor drop by, and there wasn’t any food to feed him. So the man goes to his friend’s house at midnight to ask for bread to feed his visitor. Well the friend is in bed and says he not going to get out of bed to give the man any bread. You know, it’s late and this is just a major pain in the butt. Friend or not, I’m staying in bed.

Here’s the rest of the parable…Jesus said, “But I tell you this…though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence. And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking and you will find. Keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.”

I hope you got that. We could discuss that parable for an hour, but the message is clear. And it comes from the mouth of Jesus Christ.

It’s Up To You

Well that’s my message for you….and for me. I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for a new year. We can succeed in any situation. And we can succeed big! The words in this blog, based on proven success principles that have stood the test of time, can be your key to an absolutely incredible 2014. God bless you on your journey to being successful in 2014, and my prayers go with you all.
